TITLE | Introduction to Architectural Modelling
UM LEVEL | 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course
MQF LEVEL | 5 | ||||||||
ECTS CREDITS | 4 | ||||||||
DEPARTMENT | Visual Arts
DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will introduce students to - various types of models; - various types of materials used in modeling; - different types of techniques used in modeling; - different technologies available for modern modeling. Students will be encouraged to decide which form of architectural model is necessary for the various types of projects or scenarios. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to equip students with the knowledge to conceptualize the ideal form of architectural models for the various phases of an architectural project. The different phases of an architectural project require a variation in architectural modeling. The study-unit will seek to introduce students both to traditional model-making techniques, but also to digital technologies such as computer-aided 3D-printing and laser cutting. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify which techniques to use in the respective phase of the architectural project; - Identify which tools to use in the various techniques available; - Identify which references and case studies to look into; - Identify which materials and technologies to use or the respective phase of project. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use basic tools, such as blade or surgical knife, for cutting various materials, - use a 3D-printer; - prepare files for 3-D printing operations; - choose the proper materials for 3D-printing; - choose the proper materials for laser cutting; - choose the appropriate software for laser cutting techniques; - identify materials and their characteristics, to be used in different phases of an architectural project. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - On-line texts and manuals will be advised during the course |
