DESCRIPTION | The study-unit investigates the major movements in architecture, fine art and design, which also include industrial and product design, graphic design as mirror of social, cultural, and technological ideas within broadly defined cultural context. Particular attention is given to topics such as artist/architect/designer's role in production of visual environment, development of design in context of other kinds of visual media and many other influences and theories that continue to echo through contemporary practice.to explore a key area of 20th century culture within its integrative historical, social and political settings, investigating the artistic innovation, impact and influences shared by concurrent creative practices across fine art, design, architecture, film and media, music and performance and other practices. Study-Unit Aims: The objectives of this study-unit are to: - Introduce students to the major movements within art, architecture and design history; - Place major works within their historical, social and political context; - Provide contextual continuity between architectural, artistic and design works; - Place students' own work into the appropriate cultural context. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and understand the most important periods in architectural, art and design history of the last century; - Get to know and discuss major architectural, art and design exponents and movements of the last century; - Place their own work within a historical context. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: read 20th century culture movements, whilst: - developing and undertaking research practice; - making presentations, and developing communication and intellectual skills; - engaging in independent contribution and effort; - engaging in teamwork, group interaction and collaboration.
