DESCRIPTION This study-unit exposes students to the phenomenon of crime and delinquency in the criminal justice perspective.

The most nominal question is why do youths resort to delinquency? This study unit will address this phenomenon. Students will be introduced to concepts related to the process of juvenile justice. This study unit will also focus on issues related to prevention of crime and delinquency.

Course structure:
1. Delinquency and crime: an introduction;
2. Measuring delinquency and crime;
3. Youth violence;
4. Family related risk factors;
5. School related risk factors;
6. Peers and gangs;
7. Youths in corrections;
8. Youths: victimology.

Study-unit Aims:

To familiarise students with:
1. the notions of juvenile delinquency and crime;
2. the criminal justice process faced by delinquent and criminal youths;
3. measures to reduce and prevent delinquency.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) appreciate the relationship between youths and society;
2) appreciate studies that focus on aetiology of juvenile delinquency and the development of criminal careers;
3) appreciate the influence of risk factors as promoters to delinquency: family, school, educational, substance misuse, peers and gang issues;
4) appreciate issues related to police, sentencing and corrections.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) criminologically assess the delinquent behaviour of a young person and possibly trace the risks that triggerred delinquency;
2) outline potential crime prevention initiatives;
3) deliver a presentation on issues related to youths, delinquency and juvenile justice.
