DESCRIPTION This study-unit targets student engagement with a political sociological investigation of participation and activism in social movements. For this to take place lecture discussions will delve into differences, cleavages and continuity between structure and agency and different dimensions of power (macro, micro). Contextual components such as governance, protest, the state and empowerment will embody the discussion.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to develop a comprehensive sociological understanding of governance and social movements. This will enable a critical analysis of concepts, events and processes such as governance, protest, the state and empowerment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain processes, issues and governance related to political organizations using a sociological perspective;
- Identify sociological constructs such as structure and agency and different dimensions of power (macro, micro).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyze key aspects of policy-making processes such as empowerment, lobbying, ideology and strategy;
- Sociologically and critically interpret political issues;
- Analyze specific political issues through the deployment of study-unit content.
