| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed for non-Maltese beginners who already possess a basic knowledge of Maltese at CEFR level A1, and who would like to continue developing their communication skills. It adheres to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level A2 language descriptors in listening comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension and written expression, and it introduces basic grammatical knowledge so that learners would then be able to further their knowledge of Maltese. The participants will continue to acquire important linguistic tools for participating in their study and living environments. Importance will be given to intercultural competence in a Maltese context. Learning Objectives: By the end of the study-unit the participants will be able to: - understand and use appropriate intonation; - comprehend time indicators, e.g. ilbieraħ, għada, ġimgħa oħra; - work with numbers in Maltese including prices, time-tables, etc.; - feel familiar with main cultural events and holidays. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - follow short, simple instructions in both spoken and written forms; - reply to an email when the topic deals with everyday information; - talk about plans for the future; - communicate in simple routine tasks; - handle simple social exchanges, e.g. answering the phone, ordering food, etc.; - ask for and give directions in Maltese; - listen to and identify the main ideas of TV and radio programmes such as the weather forecast and the news; - prepare a one-minute monologue about a familiar topic; - apply appropriate basic social etiquette within the Maltese sociolinguistic context. Unit Material: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. |
