DESCRIPTION This ten-week unit is for students who want to learn the basics of playing folk guitar. Groups will be limited to a maximum number of 10 and according to the needs of the students this group might be split up into 5 students for the first hour and another five in the second hour. After learning very basic music notation, the study-unit proceeds to cover the basic guitar techniques such as holding your guitar properly, correct left and right arm posture, correct left hand fingering and correct strumming techniques. The study-unit covers the simplest chords in a practical manner in such a way that the chords gradually learnt enable the student to play a simple song. Eventually the performance of simple melodies will also be introduced. The study-unit is fun and practical without being superficial and is good if you just want to learn the basics of the instrument to impress your friends or if you intend to study the instrument further.

Learning Objectives:

• To familiarise students with the folk guitar as a musical instrument;
• To give students the correct posture and technique for guitar playing;
• To make the students learn the simple chords on the guitar;
• To introduce the students to the basics of music notation;
• To enable students to play simple melodies on the guitar;
• To familiarise students with the basic concepts of music – rhythm, pitch, time signature and tempo.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate literature and music repertoire to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. However throughout the course the tutor will set practical tasks to each student according to his needs. It is very important that from one week to the next one practices at home regularly to progress in the course. In fact most lessons will begin with a review of what was done in the previous lesson so that the tutor can assess the development of the different skills required for this unit.

ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there are an insufficient number of applicants.
