| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit combines de Bono’s Thinking Skills, the Six Thinking Hats and Lateral Thinking with ways to use creativity and the arts in the classroom. Students will be introduced to Professor Edward de Bono’s CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) Programme, the Six Thinking Hats and Lateral Thinking. Teaching thinking skills to primary school children enables them to be more flexible in their thinking patterns. The skills help children to become more autonomous thinkers, raise their self-esteem and provide them with tools which they can easily use to generate more ideas and to develop their potential for creative thinking. Practical interactive sessions will be conducted where students will learn how to use the de Bono Thinking Skills, the Six Thinking Hats and Lateral Thinking in different situations and how these can be applied to different subjects in the primary curriculum. Creativity and how the arts can be used to nurture this in the classroom will be discussed and various creative and ideas generation techniques will be tried out during interactive lectures. Lectures will also discuss the different objectives and aspects of theatre for children including Edutainment and TiEs (Theatre in Education productions). The study-unit involves going to theatre productions which will then be analysed from a technical and creative point of view. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provoke alternative ways of thinking, imaginative, creative, affective and effective thinking through idea generation tools and thinking skills. Also it aims to enhance knowledge of aesthetics particularly with reference to theatre. This unit aims to enrich students’ understanding of the importance of theatrical experiences in children’s lives. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the importance of creativity and the value of idea generation methods in the primary classroom; - Recognise the important role that perception plays in the process of thinking and of creativity; - Discuss how children learn through theatre; - Recognise the significance of theatre in children's lives and that children should have regular access to this in their schooling; - Define what makes quality theatre for children by recognising the complexities and different aspects involved in creating such theatre. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply tools and methods (including Edward de Bono’s Lateral Thinking, Six Thinking Hats and CoRT tools) which will enable them to generate new ideas and to broaden their perception; - Teach and apply the various methodologies and to recognise the variety of situations to which they may be applied; - Choose theatre productions which are truly appropriate and inspiring for the children they teach; - Plan ways of using theatre performances as inspiration in the classroom.
