In Memoriam: Professor Ronald G. Sultana - A Tribute to a Pioneering Scholar and Inspirational Leader

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, esteemed colleague, and outstanding scholar, Professor Ronald G. Sultana. His departure leaves an indelible void in our hearts and a notable vacuum in the academic world. Professor Sultana, was a visionary educator and a pivotal Dean during a crucial juncture in the Faculty's history. He has left an indelible mark on every person that came in contact with him. His influence, within the Faculty, but not only, is poised to have a lasting impact.

A Legacy of Dedication and Excellence

Professor Sultana was a trailblazer, dedicating his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of education. As the first Dean of our Faculty to pass away, he leaves behind a legacy marked by unwavering commitment, passion, and a profound love for academia. His influence extended far beyond the confines of our institution, earning him recognition and respect on a global scale.

Recipient of the ESVDC 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award

In 2023, Professor Sultana was honored with the prestigious ESVDC Distinguished Scholar Award. This accolade, bestowed annually by the European Society for Vocational Design and Career Counselling, recognizes senior researchers who have significantly contributed to the study of career guidance and life transitions to work. Professor Sultana joined the ranks of distinguished scholars from renowned institutions, including the Universities of Canterbury, Queensland, Lausanne, and Heidelberg.

A Career of Distinction and Contribution

Professor Ronald G. Sultana,  Professor of Educational Sociology and Comparative Education at the University of Malta, directed the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research (EMCER). His academic journey spanned across Malta, the UK, and New Zealand, where he served as a Fulbright Fellow at Stanford University in the USA.

His commitment to education and career guidance was unparalleled, as reflected in his role as the founding editor of the Mediterranean Journal of Educational Studies. With 40 volumes to his name, he authored and edited numerous works, including over 120 articles and chapters in refereed journals and books. Professor Sultana's research transcended geographical boundaries, taking him to the Mediterranean, Africa, and Europe.

International Recognition and Influence

Professor Sultana's impact reached far and wide, as evidenced by his advisory roles with international agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF, GIZ, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the European Union. He played a crucial part in shaping educational policies and fostering innovation in the field.

In 2020, his exemplary contributions were recognized by Laval University in Quebec, which awarded him a Doctorate Honoris Causa. This prestigious acknowledgment underscored his outstanding achievements and influence in the disciplinary fields taught at Laval.

Emeritus Prof. Hazel Reid of Canterbury Christchurch University aptly remarked, "Ronald's long and outstanding career in career guidance, educational sociology, teacher training, innovative policy consultation, and the pursuit of equity and social justice make him the first among equals in terms of his distinguished contributions to the sector."
