Collaboration and International Relations

Collaboration Opportunities with the Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department is dedicated to cultivating strong partnerships with academia, research centers, industrial entities, private sector organizations, non-governmental organizations, and public bodies, both within Malta and internationally. These collaborations are crucial for fostering excellence in research and education, driving innovation, and tackling pressing real-world issues.

There are several avenues for potential collaboration with the Department:

1. Research Partnerships

The Department actively seeks partners to engage in collaborative research projects that align with mutual interests. These projects can capitalize on the Department's specialized knowledge in areas such as power electronics, renewable energy integration, electrical machines and drives, microgrids, smart grids, and electric transportation. The Department is a proactive participant in collaborative research initiatives supported by various public funding opportunities, including:

  • National programs funded by Xjenza Malta, and the Energy and Water Agency
  • International frameworks such as the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership), Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP), SINO-MALTA FUND Joint Call, and Horizon Europe.

2. Contract Research

Companies have the opportunity to commission the Department's experienced faculty and talented research students to undertake specific research tasks or in-depth studies tailored to their unique operational needs. This service provides access to the University's specialized knowledge base and state-of-the-art resources.

3. Talent Development

Collaborative projects can be integrated into our curriculum through MSc (by research) and PhD theses. This allows external partners to benefit from rigorous research and potential solutions to their specific challenges, while simultaneously providing students with invaluable practical experience in a real-world context.

4. Knowledge Transfer

The Department fosters a two-way exchange of knowledge. External industrial and academic professionals are invited to enrich the Department's academic programs by delivering insightful guest lectures or conducting specialized workshops, sharing their practical insights and real-world experiences with both students and faculty. Conversely, the Department's expertise can also be shared with external partners through similar engagements.

5. Access to Expertise and Facilities

Faculty members within the Department possess specialized expertise across various domains of electrical engineering and are available to provide consultancy services to companies, offering tailored technical advice and effective solutions to specific engineering challenges. Depending on the collaborative arrangement, partner organizations may also gain access to the Department's well-equipped laboratories for purposes such as testing, prototyping, and advanced research.

6. Networking and Outreach

The Department actively participates in relevant industry events, conferences, and workshops, creating valuable opportunities for networking and the establishment of new collaborative relationships. Furthermore, the Department is keen to collaborate with external partners in the joint organization of seminars, workshops, and conferences focused on topics of mutual interest, thereby promoting knowledge exchange and fostering connections between experts from both academia and industry.

International relations

The Department deeply values international connections and actively works to strengthen existing collaborations while strategically expanding its global network. We are committed to attracting new international partnerships that enrich our research and academic environment.

We warmly welcome international guests as visiting researchers and visiting scholars, believing their presence significantly contributes to a vibrant and stimulating learning environment for all our students and staff. Graduate students from around the world who are interested in pursuing studies or undertaking internships under the guidance of our experienced academics will find exceptional opportunities here. By engaging in focused, research-driven settings, they can gain invaluable practical experience and deepen their knowledge within their chosen area of expertise. The reciprocal exchange of knowledge fostered within such an international atmosphere during these visits yields substantial benefits for both our academic staff and our students, broadening perspectives and fostering global understanding.
