Carousel Week Malta
23rd – 27th March 2020
 
The Carousel Week programme features several activities in electrical engineering. You will be part of a team of students from Malta, France, Finland and Hungary.

 

Carousel Week in Malta

The project undertaken in Malta will be the monitoring of the moisture level of the soil of some potted plants in order to irrigate the plants automatically. Students will be controlling some water valves based on an embedded system using an Arduino. 

Prerequisite: basic programming skills

As part of the week activities we will also have the opportunity to visit Methode Electronics, ST Microelectronics and Medavia, three long-standing companies in Malta with international ties. The visit will demonstrate what can be accomplished through team work in Europe and beyond.

The week will also include social and cultural activities such walking tour of Valletta, a visit to the Hagar Qim Temples, and more. These activities are being organised with the support of University Engineering Student Association.

Information for Maltese students
The Carousel Week is open to participation for all students registered for the B.Eng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and are currently in their first year of studies. During this week, all lectures and laboratory sessions will be cancelled and lecturers will be advising you to reschedule the lectures of this week. 

You may choose to participate in Malta or in any one of the participating countries and the Carousel Week will be recognised as a Degree Plus activity. 


For those wishing to travel, with the help of its sponsors, the Faculty of Engineering has available funds of up to €1,400 to cover travel costs. These funds will be shared equitably among those who will travel, upon presentation of embarkation cards.

Information for International students

Costs

The Faculty of Engineering offers a special student rate of €125 which includes:
  • Tuition fees and workshop material
  • Accommodation on a bed-and-breakfast basis for six nights at the Kappara Hotel
  • Five lunches
  • Transport to and from University for the company visits
  • Cultural visits to Valletta and the Hagar Qim Temples
This student rate does not include transport to and from the airport or dinners
The first five students who apply for the Carousel Week in Malta will be eligible for a further discounted rate of only €50

Accommodation

The University of Malta offers shared rooms on a bed-and-breakfast basis at the Kappara Hotel, Triq Wied Ghollieqa Kappara, San Gwann SGN 1000
This hotel is within walking distance to the University and UM students will meet you at the hotel to show you the way.
The hotel can be reached from the Airport via public transport. From the airport routes X1 or X2 bring you to bus-stop Universita 1 from where route 24 takes you to bus-stop Korvu adjacent to the hotel.
The hotel has public transport connection to Valletta on a half-hourly basis via bus 24. Alternatively, you may walk the short distance between the hotel and the general hospital where you can find more routes to various parts of the island.
