Cultural Programme for Registered Conference Delegates
In partnership with Heritage Malta and the Malta National Library, we are delighted to offer a series of complimentary cultural visits spread around the capital city, Valletta, that are walking distance away from the conference venue.

1a) Heritage Malta: National Museum of Archeology [27th or 28th @ 12.45pm]
Housed at the Auberge de Provence of the Knights of St John, in Republic Street, Valletta, the building of the National Museum of Archaeology is homed in one of the most elaborately decorated Baroque buildings in the city. Constructed in 1571, the auberge boasts an extraordinary elegance in the richly painted walls and wooden beamed ceiling of the Gran Salon within. A visit to this museum offers a spectacular range of artifacts which date back to Malta’s Neolithic Period (5000 BC) up to the Phoenician Period (400 BC).
1b) Heritage Malta: National Museum of Art at MUŻA [27th or 28th @ 12.45pm]
MUŻA is Malta’s brand new visual arts institution and legacy project for Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture title. The collection is laid out in sections inspired by stories grouped into four main themes; The Mediterranean, Europe, Empire and The Artist. The display is surprisingly unusual as it juxtaposes old masters with contemporary artworks, groups artworks and objects in ways similar to contemporary art installations, presents techniques on videos and interactive experiences complement objects and artworks on display. Key works include those by Southern Italian artist Mattia Preti, British 20th-century artist Victor Pasmore and Malta’s own top 20th-century sculptor Antonio Sciortino.
1c) Heritage Malta: National War Museum at Fort St Elmo [27th or 28th @ 12.45pm]
Visitors at Fort St Elmo can enjoy a twofold experience. Originally intended as a war machine, the fort was built in a strategic location to face and hold back the menacing Ottoman attacks. This dominating position now offers unobstructed panoramic views of the harbours and the surrounding towns and villages. The fort also hosts the National War Museum which houses a superb collection of artifacts that go back to prehistoric times.
In addition to your Heritage Malta selection, you may opt to visit the National Library too.
2) National Library [26th, 27th, 28th @8.00am]
The tour will include important works relating to Maltese history; such as a 1567 account of the Great Siege of Malta. Among the items, there will also be 19th-century views of Malta by C.F. de Brockdorff and an album of 18th-century costumes of Malta. Visitors will also be able to view facsimiles of some important historical documents such as the George Cross citation, as well as early editions of 19th-century children’s literature books.
Also, during the conference be sure to visit our on-site pop-up shop featuring local artist extraordinaire, Isabel (Izzy) Warrington, and local publishing house, Merlin Library. Here, you can browse Maltese books for children and engage Izzy in creating your very own artwork as a memento of the conference or as a special gift to take home to a loved one.
Izzy Warrington lives and breathes the stage - from illustrations, painting to dancing and acting, she celebrates movement and magic in her work. Often childlike, but never completely innocent, her fine art illustration and freestyle drawing repertoire include caricatures too. At the moment, watercolour is her preferred medium although she still enjoys experimenting with other media, especially making costumes out of discarded objects and materials - particularly for props!
Merlin Publishers is Chris Gruppetta's brainchild, where he is both publisher and editor. The leading name in publishing, Merlin are renowned for children's and young adult books, which is rooted in Chris' experience working with some of the best local contemporary authors as well as his expertise in the science of children's book cover design. Through Merlin Publishers, Chris has contributed to the professionalisation of the industry with focus on content, editorial and design aspects of the book, and a fresh approach to book marketing.
