About

Sustainable development is at the core of UNESCO’s 2030 Agenda to improve the quality of life for everyone, clearly outlined by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which integrate poverty alleviation and sustainability for the first time. Education is key to achieving sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) focuses on instilling pro-environmental values, changing behaviours, and fostering individual and collective action.

The University of Malta established the Centre for Environmental Education & Research (CEER) in 2004, in anticipation of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). CEER conducts research on effective strategies for fostering change and collaborates with government, industry and private entities on policy formulation related to sustainability. It also spearheads various educational initiatives, both in formal settings and within the community.

Besides providing academic and research opportunities, CEER facilitates community-based sustainable development by:

(a) serving as a central hub for ESD expertise in Malta, facilitating collaboration among stakeholders and supporting NGOs and Civil Society Organizations;

(b) preparing individuals from various sectors of society to specialise in ESD through its Master in ESD;

(c) conducting training programs for personnel in governmental, business, and industrial sectors, emphasizing behavioural change for sustainability;

(d) partnering with local, regional, and international organizations for joint ESD projects; and

(e) engaging in policy-making forums to enhance ESD provision and implementation.

While celebrating CEER's achievements, the conference aims not only showcases alumni's work but also advocates for their ongoing efforts as change agents across various sectors. The event has four main objectives:

  1. Provide a platform for CEER alumni and associates to present their work and engage participants.
  2. Facilitate networking opportunities for practitioners, researchers, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  3. Showcase ESD work by various NGOs and stakeholders through exhibition booths.
  4. Develop an action plan for national ESD provision and enhance CEER's effectiveness in achieving its goals.
