Call for papers

Dear Colleagues,

The Sixth Workshop on Gender, Methodology and the Ancient Near East (GeMANE 6) will take place as a hybrid event on the 8–11 April, 2024, hosted by University of Malta’s Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures  and the International School for Foundation Studies. Previous GeMANE workshops were held in Helsinki (2014), Barcelona (2017), Ghent (2019), online (2021) and Helsinki again (2022). The workshop will take place at the University of Malta, Valletta campus The official website will be available very soon.

The aim of the workshops is to discuss different methodological and theoretical approaches to gender within the framework of ancient Near Eastern studies. The scope of the workshop includes textual, art historical and archaeological approaches (including neighbouring disciplines) as long as the work contributes new insights into the study of gender in the ancient Near East in the broadest and most inclusive way possible.

We therefore invite all scholars interested in and working on gender related topics within the broad field of ancient Near Eastern studies, including but not limited to ancient history, archaeology, art history, Assyriology, Egyptology and Biblical studies to submit a proposal for a 15-minute paper. All proposals are very welcome.

Abstracts of 300–500 words are to be sent via email  to gemane2024@um.edu.mt before October 15, 2023. The Committee will send an email by November 10, 2023  informing authors whether their paper or poster proposal has been accepted or not.

Papers presented during the GeMANE 6 can be submitted for a peer-reviewed publication after the workshop. Further information on deadlines and instructions for authors will follow in due time. The proceedings of GeMANE 4 and GeMANE 5 (edited by Ellie Bennett, Megan Cifarelli, Omar N’Shea and Allison Thomason) combined will be published to coincide with the GeMANE 6 workshop. Please note that GeMANE 6 will adhere to ASOR guidelines regarding the publication of undocumented antiquities as shown in Section E here

All presenters must be registered via this e-form before November 20, 2023. All other participants (in person or remote) are encouraged to register as early as possible to avoid late registration fees.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions via email.
