The Food Culture course is aimed at students, such as tourist guides, to provide them with the necessary insights into the cultural history of food. Candidates will explore methods related to the behaviour surrounding food production, distribution and consumption. Case material from specific areas include Malta, the Mediterranean and mainland Europe.
The course relies on historical factors, but will also look at relatively recent food-related events. Explored will be the way cooking methods transformed traditional food over time and the changing patterns of eating behaviour, taking specific regions and particular foods as case-studies.

Programme for Tourism Operators in Gozo
Gozo - History and its Interpretation
We offering a fully-sponsored part time programme of studies for all those working in the Tourism Sector in Gozo.
The aim is to introduce participants to the narrative of Gozo, presenting novel information and approaches. In the 2018-19 Academic year the programme was launched with the well-attended Tourism in Gozo (Turiżmu f’Għawdex) and The Gozo Experience (L-Esperjenza 'Għawdex') lecture programme. The year 2019-20 the lectures were focused on Gozo - History and its Interpretation.
The unit has been designed to offer ample opportunities for participants to discuss and study the history of Gozo from a modern perspective; enhancing the knowledge, understanding and awareness of the rich culture and heritage of the island.
The lectures are held at UM's Xewkija Campus and commence around mid- November. The free programme is spread over 14 weeks, and will be delivered by academics, who are specialists in the field, from the University of Malta. Lectures usually take place on Monday evenings from 18:00 to 20:00 and Tuesday mornings, 08:00 to 10:00 for the convenience of those working in the tourism and cultural sectors.
Participants who attend for at least 75% of the lectures and opt not to take the assessments will be awarded a certificate of attendance. Students who successfully pass the final assessment will be awarded a certificate from the University of Malta weighted at 8 ECTS.

Events vary tremendously in size and complexity, from the simple and small, such as the local pub quiz, to the huge, complex and international, such as international sporting and cultural events. The range and diversity of events includes training seminars, motor shows, film festivals, Carnival, fine arts & antiques fairs, political conferences, product launches, fashion shows, sports events, sales conferences, wedding receptions, exhibitions, religious festivals, village festas and festivals, music concerts, parades, historical re-enactments, book fairs, fund-raising activities, arts festivals and more.
The efforts of event planners and designers is to seek positive experiences and productive outcomes, leading to meanings being attached to those events that are personally and socially positive. The course will address the wide-ranging operational and management issues of such a diverse sector, allowing the student to understand how events are developed, why they are hosted and how they are managed.
This course aims to provide students with an overview of critical understanding of the issues involved in managing events. These include policy contexts, resource development, visitor profiles, visitor management, market orientation, marketing, human resources management, finance, ethics, health & safety and sustainability. The use of a range of practical case studies will allow the students to develop an analytical appreciation of management concepts and operational issues.

The course will consist of 10 sessions of 2.5 hours each, Wednesdays 17.30 – 20.00, starting Wednesday 26th February and ending around the end of April.
