Master of Science in Mental Health Nursing

Mental Health services are expanding all the time in recognition of the huge impact mental health and illness has on society. Hence, the Master of Science in Mental Health Nursing aims to provide the knowledge, confidence and skills for psychiatric/general nurses and midwives to target their own self development and make a major contribution to professional care in mental health. This is enabled through a person-centred approach that is the philosophical approach guiding the programme.

This academic programme exposes you to the various facets relating to mental health care, such as facilitating the recovery of persons with acute and long-term mental health conditions. This includes  providing the latest evidence-based knowledge relating to caring for persons with addictions, personality, maternal health, sexual and eating disorders amongst others.  You will also have the opportunity to learn about a diversity of approaches and skills that can be used both in your own self-care and when caring for service users and their families.

The programme also provides you with research and ethical skills that contribute to enhancement of your knowledge base, clinical practice and service delivery. The acquisition of such knowledge and skills enables graduates to contribute to the challenging and rewarding area of mental health care as dynamic and reflective professionals who can serve as change agents and who can take up clinical leadership and/or management and education posts.
