Applications are invited for the post of Teaching Associate / Senior Teaching Associate in the International School for Foundation Studies

The appointment will be offered for a one-year period with the possibility of renewal after one year.

The appointee will be required to contribute to the teaching up to and including MQF Level 4 and administrative duties of the School, and as may be required by the University. 

Teaching Associate

Applicants will be required to have a first degree (Level 6) and a Master’s degree (Level 7) with a specialisation in the teaching of Academic English and a minimum of three (3) years relevant teaching experience. 

Senior Teaching Associate

Applicants will be required to have a first degree (Level 6) and a Master’s degree (Level 7) in a relevant discipline, an English language teaching qualification (for example, DELTA Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) and a minimum of six (6) years relevant teaching experience. Experience of working with adult learners, particularly students from the Gulf States, China, Japan, and South Korea, will be considered an asset.

The annual salary for 2023 attached to Teaching Associate and Senior Teaching Associate is as follows:

Teaching Associate: €34,095 plus Academic Work Resources of €1,600
Senior Teaching Associate: €37,884 plus Academic Work Resources of €1,600

Further Information

General Working Obligations:

A Teaching Associate / Senior Teaching Associate will be appointed on a full-time (40) hour per week basis between Monday to Friday out of which no more than half shall be devoted to teaching.

A Teaching Associate / Senior Teaching Associate will be expected to work between 08:00 and 17:00 hours and beyond 17:00 hours no more than once per week.

The International School for Foundation Studies

The International School for Foundation Studies’ Foundation programme (https://www.um.edu.mt/foundationstudies/) offers a one-year bridging course open to applicants who present a high school certificate issued overseas and who have studied within an education system that is not comparable to the Maltese system in terms of curriculum and years of study. The Foundation Studies Programme is offered in Humanities, Business Studies, (Tourism), Science (Physics) (Chemistry), Engineering and ICT, Medical and Dental Sciences and in the Health Sciences (Occupational Therapy) (Nursing) (Podiatry) & (Applied Food and Nutritional Sciences) streams. Our students come from very diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds but they are already effective users of English as a lingua franca. The School’s aim is to assist its students in developing their academic literacy by focussing on the stream-specific communication needs and by providing an equitable and inclusive learning environment in which students can demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge and skills appropriately and effectively. The Commencement Programme is a year-long course designed to provide students with the relevant academic skills to be able to progress successfully to the Foundation Programme.

Besides teaching by means of lectures, seminars and tutorials, assessment and administration, the duties which the appointee will be expected to perform within the School are:

  • Teaching including lectures, tutorials and seminars, and one-on-one support in Medical and Technical English as well academic English for the Humanities, Social Sciences and Business and English for Special Purposes Preparing course materials;
  • Continuous assessment of students;
  • Participating in the administration of academic affairs at School and university levels;
  • Promoting students in their academic welfare;
  • Organising and participating in seminars and/or inset sessions as required;
  • Using the University of Malta’s VLE (Moodle) to interact with students;
  • Coordinating continuous assessment of students by preparing formative tests and providing detailed feedback to students;
  • Attending academic meetings during which the appointee will be expected to provide information and
  • feedback related to the academic and psycho-social progress of students;
  • Participating in Board of Studies meetings;
  • Participating in Board of Examiners’ meetings and setting and marking summative examination papers within established time-frames;
  • Identifying students who are encountering difficulties and providing additional support as needed;
  • Being available for consultation with students;
  • Preparing academic reports regarding student progress and attendance;
  • Writing and grading summative assessment papers for your study units;
  • Developing teaching material for Academic English in collaboration with colleagues
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the University.

The Selection Procedures 

  • The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • Short-listing of candidates.
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.
  • A short presentation on a subject allotted to short-listed candidates.

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Resident Academic Staff” (https://www.um.edu.mt/hrmd/policiesprocedures).

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant Academic / Work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability; and
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Statues, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
