Title: ACROSS (Advanced Cockpit for Reduction of Stress and Workload)
Duration: 2013-2016
Funding scheme: EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research (Grant agreement: 314501)
Overall budget: EUR 30,499,179
UM budget: EUR 450,000
UM coordinator: Prof. Ing. David Zammit Mangion
ACROSS focused on the development of technologies to reduce crew workload in normal and abnormal situations and to facilitate the introduction of reduced crew operations (i.e. single pilot operations). The project brought together over 35 partners from the European Research Area, led by Thales Avionics.
The University of Malta was tasked with the development of a decision support tool to enable pilots to objectively consider appropriate deviations from the Standard Instrument Departure (SID) route in order to avoid hazardous weather and terrain during departure operations. This tool was integrated in NLR's full flight simulator and evaluated by commercial airline pilots.
