The Fast Trajectory Optimisation algorithms were developed by the University of Malta and are designed to support fast trajectory optimisation on limited computational resources. These algorithms use parameterised models that define a family of optimal trajectories that can be generated off line for specific tail numbers for different operational conditions (weights, time of flight, flight plan, weather conditions, etc).
The parameterisation variables are stored in the flight management system and are then used to generate, in real time, an optimal trajectory for the specific operational condition faster than traditional optimisation methods can. The technique has been scientifically shown to generate results that agree very closely with those generated by classical optimisation algorithms and variations are well below significant levels.
