Modular photovoltaic and insulating tiles

MEDSOLAR – modular photovoltaic and insulating tiles.

Project number: KD05LMS

The Invention

The standard format for solar panels we are all used to seeing provide a robust, rigid panel and an ideal shape and size for workers to install on slanted roofs and in large solar farms. The glass exterior, aluminium frame and backside sheet protect the solar cells from the elements and from breakage. However, when it comes to flat roofs generally found in the Mediterranean, this fit is not as suitable, especially when it comes to smaller roofs and often creates an eyesore.

Medsolar  is a photovoltaic system designed specifically for Mediterranean style flat roofs.  The solution which will not only provide the same benefit at a similar cost to current systems, but will be easier to install and provide energy saving benefits as well as be less of an eyesore than current PV systems. Such a solution would be perfectly suited not only to Maltese homes but also anywhere with similar construction such as the southern Mediterranean, Middle-East and North Africa.

Development Status

The technology is at prototype stage and is currently being tested.

Commercial Interest

We are looking for potential licensees and collaborators to develop a final product for commercialisation.

Other Information

The project is funded by the Malta Council for Science & Technology through FUSION: the Programme for Research & Innovation in Technological Development.
