Studying with us

The Department of European & Comparative Law runs a full range of courses in European Law at postgraduate level.

Our LL.M. programmes (Master of Laws in European and Comparative Law and European Business Law) are respected academic qualifications recognised worldwide that has trained judges, practising lawyers and civil servants in Europe and beyond. We welcome PhD students too.

All our teaching is conducted in the English language, making our course units suitable for international students and attracting a growing number of international candidates every year. In addition, the Department has an active research and publications programme.

Our programmes are annually validated by rotating external examiners from prestigious universities in Europe, including Oxford, London, Dublin, Durham, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. They have included Professors Stephen Weatherill, Francis Snyder, Professor Jo Shaw, Rosemarie Greaves and Helen Xanthaki, among others. Members of the Department’s academic staff also serve as judges at the CJEU.
Our LLMs are suitable for those who want to have a career in private practice, civil service, European and international law firms and institutions or academia. We welcome both lawyers and graduands with a non-law degree depending on the stream.
The European and Comparative Law stream focuses on core EU law subjects such as the EU Internal Market and judicial protection, plus it offers a wide range of elective study units. The LLM in European Business Law focuses on Business-related subjects such as competition and company law and many business-related elective study-units.
The programmes are mainly taught in small groups through a number of seminars followed by a dissertation of 30 ECTS:

Our Department also welcomes PhD proposals from interested candidates. Past successful candidates have graduated with a thesis in European Law, European Criminal Law, and public and private law, among others.
