Abstract: | This dissertation is aimed at answering whether Statements of Cash Flows are comparable under IAS 7 and whether comparability is achieved better under rulebased standards than under principle-based standards. The study also looks at could be done to improve the comparability of the Statements of Cash Flows. Design A qualitative approach was taken to conduct this study by carrying out a content analysis on the Statement of Cash of 27 EU commercial banks. Further analysis and interviews were also carried out. These research tools provided an understanding on the comparability issues and served as a tool to answer the research questions. Findings Statements of Cash Flows drawn up under the existing IAS 7 are not directly comparable between different banks due to differences in the reporting methods of operating cash flows and to differences in the classification of dividends received. This classification issue is mainly due to the lack of cash flow disclosure provided in the statement. Conclusions Rule-based standards enhance comparability compared to principle-based standards; however it might still not be practicable to convert IAS 7 into a rulebased standard. It is also crucial for IAS 7 to provide a standard format to draw up the Statements of Cash Flows. Value: This dissertation highlights the comparability issues that exist in the Statements of Cash Flow and the need for improvement. It also provides some recommendations on how to overcome these issues. |
