Abstract: This study aimed to answer the following research question: ‘What are the roles and characteristics of SME owner-manager conducive to strategic organizational growth?’A qualitative research analysis was adopted and an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used as a methodological approach of this research. The sample consisted of six small business owner-managers operating in the retail sector. In depth semi-structured interviews were carried out. Four superordinate themes emerged namely: Always alert for new business opportunities; Building positive interpersonal relationships with customers and employees; Learning from experience; Believing in one’s aptitude to do business and; Commitment toward continued business growth. The SME owner-managers emerged as being entrepreneurial oriented and resilient individuals. Further research on female SME owner-manager and SME owner-manager who are younger age were recommended.
