Abstract: | Small island developing states tend to be highly exposed to external economic shocks because of their inherent characteristics, mostly associated with trade openness. However there are policy measures which enable small states to reduce or withstand the harm resulting from exposure to external shocks, which Briguglio et al (2009) term as resilience building policies. This paper shows that the resilience index constructed by Briguglio is closely correlated to the competitiveness of countries. The main implication of this paper is that countries that enhance competitiveness are also like to enhance their economic resilience. |
