Abstract

This dissertation is based on the idea that Maltese traditional folktales, besides being enjoyable literature for all ages, play a crucial part in teaching language skills. In addition, they could be used with young children to learn about the structure of narrative whilst learning about human values relevant to today’s life. Therefore, I investigated some critical aspects, with regards to this genre and some pedagogical aspects in relation to Maltese folktales as a salient point. Thereafter, I analysed a number of critical characteristics related to this genre, and furthermore, I designed a scheme of work based on a number of traditional Maltese folktales which were purposely adapted to become more child friendly. The lesson plans include a number of eye catching worksheets in order to meet the set objectives easily. To evaluate this proposal, I trialled four lessons with year two primary students and presented the Scheme of Work and the respective resources to a number of teachers teaching this age group. From my research, it transpired that the folktales are useful to achieve the abovementioned learning objectives easily and in a way that is fun for young children. Besides, the teachers that participated in the study agreed that once the Maltese Language Syllabus for primary is updated, reference ought to be made to some Maltese traditional folktales.
