Abstract: | This set of population projections covers the period 1995 to 2020. The study was commissioned by the Planning Authority to serve as an input for the current Structure Plan (SP) Review. The research team was composed of Dr. Maja Miljanic Brinkworth, Prof. Mario Vassallo, Dr. Renzo Pace Asciak, and Mr. Saviour Formosa, Ms. Marie Briguglio and Mr. Bijon Bhowmick from the Planning Authority. In a country as densely populated as Malta, and with limited land resources, population projections provide an important strategic input. The specific aim of these projections is to estimate the future size and structure of population and households. This information is useful to policy making on various issues, including the provision of housing, community facilities (education, health and social services), and utilities, the management of traffic and communications, leisure and recreational needs and the quality of the urban and environmental fabric. |
