Abstract: | A short editorial about the unstoppable development taking place in Gozo and how it can have disastrous consequences on the island. On the one hand, many of the facilities in Gozo are in need of an upgrade (like the general hospital, various schools, public spaces, etc.). On the other hand, it seems that MEPA is unable to stop unwanted development from taking place. Years of neglect have resulted in an attitude were everyone does whatever he wants. This can be clearly seen in Dwejra, where buildings have gone up and changed from boathouses to summer residences, the pebbly beach has been transformed into a slippery concrete platform, with several mini-jetties erected for the occasional launch of boats. The authorities seem powerless against this form of abuse. If this is what the the future holds for Gozo, the island is in for a rough time. |
