Abstract: This qualitative interpretative research is based on the narratives of Maltese Deaf adult members of the local Deaf micro-community. It explores their experiences of inclusion and exclusion within the Maltese hearing society in relation to their d/Deafness. It also examines Deaf people’s aspirations for their future in Malta, both individually and as a cultural and linguistic minority. Through narrative inquiry, this study particularly investigates what Deaf people think needs to be done for them to enjoy their full rights in light of the fact that the LSM Law was enacted locally in March 2016. Adopting a lifecourse approach, the study uses both the Social and Affirmation Models of Disability as theoretical frameworks within an emancipatory disability research paradigm. Deaf people are part of the marginalised individuals in Malta who are often relegated to the background and therefore face barriers to participate in society. The research explores issues encountered within the family, among peers, with colleagues and within other social circles. It also looks into participation issues within education, employment, service provision and other areas. It delves into policies that impact on the issue of involvement for the Deaf. The research uncovers the personal experiences of the Deaf with the aim of identifying factors in society which militate against their meaningful participation in the community. Participants’ recounting of their life experience highlights areas in which they face barriers mainly due to lack of communication information and belongingness. Deaf voices heard suggest ideas on how to improve the life of Maltese Deaf people. I hope to contribute to the growing body of research that can be used to support parents and families of Deaf children in their efforts to promote change and acceptance to support the full inclusion of Deaf individuals, as valued people who enrich human diversity and view Deafness as gain. Deaf people deserve and have a right to an inclusive participative community life and this requires people at all levels of society to take responsibility.
