Abstract: On June 16, 1846, the partly liberal bishop of Imola, Giovanni Mastai Ferretti, was elected to the throne of Peter as Pope Pius IX. During his pontificate, the longest in history, the confrontation of liberal ideas with traditional positions of the church, which had started in the eighteenth century and continued to grow during the French Revolution, reached its peak. The hostility was further inflamed by the revival of the Roman Question.
