Terrorism and its effects on Maltese outbound travel

Abstract

This long essay sets out to investigate the effects of terrorism with specific regard to the impact on Maltese outbound travel. The research will also outline the relationship of terrorism with tourism. Research focused on how individuals living in Malta feel about terrorism and security measures in relation to their travel patterns. Fieldwork was carried out in the form of questionnaires distributed electronically through multiple platforms in order to reach out to a varied audience. The questionnaire followed a series of topics in which travel patterns of persons living in Malta were found as well as which factors impact their travel behavior. Literature supported the research. The findings from the fieldwork outline how different individuals from different backgrounds react to security issues concerning their travel as well as how crucial safety measures play a role when planning their foreign travels. From the research methods, it was found that terrorism, unrest as well as security do not play a major role in the planning process of a Maltese traveler going abroad (individuals living within Malta) however they are more inclined to book their travels in advance whilst the important key elements include the destination and cost of their holiday as the top most priority. Whilst the literature found with regards to linking how terrorism impacts a person’s travel pattern when planning their vacation proves otherwise internationally where it definitely has become a more prominent issue to keep into consideration in the planning process. Finally, although the literature showed that tourism globally is being impacted by unrest, with regard to the Malta outbound market, this research has proven otherwise.
