Abstract: So far economists have contributed relatively little to the debate on sustainable tourism and have emerged with little kudos for their part in the development of tourism. Indeed, it is easy to cast them together with developers as the villains of the act in that they have provided theoretical, conceptual and mathematical justifications for past growth and development without adequate regard to the environmental and socio-cultural consequences of their recommendations.
