Title: | Backstage : exploring the perceived effects of pornography in male viewers in a committed heterosexual relationship |

Abstract: | Pornography surrounds us (Hari, 2005; Paul, 2005). Theories, descriptions, and statistical data have long been studied in such a field. However, my dissertation explores the meaning and perceived effects attributed to pornography consumption from a male viewer's perspective, discussed within a committed heterosexual relationship scenario. A narrative approach towards this research question focuses on whether pornography affects viewers, with respect to my participants' own interpretations towards such. Through my interviews, it was evident that pornography qualifies as a social phenomenon. Yet, it cropped up that such consumption is still highly secret within public interactions. In addition, pornography use is not selfevaluated, thus effects are not neatly listed, but actively denied. Based on the interpretations of my participants towards pornography consumption, this dissertation opens a window over the possible attitudes attached towards using pornography whilst in a committed heterosexual romantic relationship. |
