Abstract: | Identity formation is one of the most important developmental tasks in emerging adulthood. With the advent of social networking websites, such as Facebook, this developmental process has been extended onto the digital realm. This qualitative research explores the effect of Facebook on the identity formation process of Maltese University students. Facebook allows individuals to actively select identity elements they deem consistent with the impression they want to convey, creating a 'new' or projected identity. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were carried out with five local University students who use Facebook. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and emergent patterns were coded and given meaning using thematic analysis. This research demonstrates that Facebook is a tool that facilitates and enhances the process of identity formation: Users tend to assimilate identities based on exterior qualities, depending on how these are likely to be judged by others. |
