| Abstract: | Malta is a small island developing state, currently seeking full membership in the E.U. The country consists of 3 islands the total area of which is about 320 km2; with mainland Malta occupying 245 km2, Gozo 67 sq. km and Comino 3 km2. The islands are situated about 100 km south of Sicily and 350 km off the coast of North Africa. The population is about 370,000 and is characterised by a very high population density of about 1200 persons per square kilometre. |
