Issue Date: | 2009 |
Abstract: | This study examines the EU's current banking supervision framework. This structure is composed of both legislative instruments as well as other initiatives taken by various committees at EU level. It also discusses whether this supervisory framework is capable of meeting the various stakeholders' needs within the European Single Market framework. It examines the developments made in this sector, and it highlights the fundamental principles that have been retained through these developments. The different ways that certain Members States, including Malta, have adopted this framework are analysed, and an attempt is also made at analysing whether the various factors that have contributed to the European Supervisory Framework are such as can ensure that the soundness of the European banking market, and the identification of issues that might need to be addressed in the future in this sector, always remain achievable objectives in any economic conjuncture. |
