Issue Date: | 2014 |
Abstract: | This qualitative study presents a number of parents’ narratives and perspectives about the coming out of their gay/lesbian child. It seeks to understand whether and how this has affected them personally in their everyday life, especially within their household with other family members. This study also takes into consideration their perspectives on the catholic Church’s influence in Maltese society with regards homosexuality. The data collection methods adopted were one to one interviews with parents and nonparticipant observation sessions within Drachma, a support group for parents of LGBT individuals. La Sala’s (2010) concept of courtesy stigma is presented as a theoretical framework, through which the analysis is guided and informed. The findings show that all the parents were mainly concerned with their sons’/daughter’s well being, when they disclosed their sexual orientation to them. Coming out has however, also brought about family dilemmas, uncertainties and even anxities. The observation sessions revealed the tensions but also the support of members, as they confronted the legislation of the civil unions bill. The study’s findings are considered an important tool for future or aspiring youth workers, as they provide an understanding of issues surrounding the aftermath of coming out. Its results can serve as eye openers to what might be going on behind any reactions the young homosexual individual might have. The study recommends more understanding and acceptance of homosexuality in society. |
