Authors: | Farrugia, Paola |
Keywords: | John Paul II, Pope, 1920-2005 -- Teachings Christian life Lord's Supper |
Issue Date: | 2012 |
Abstract: | This dissertation is a theological attempt to present the sacrament of the Eucharist as a vital source for Christian discipleship. The research will focus on the following magisterial texts by Blessed John Paul II: the Encyclical Letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia (2003), the Apostolic Letter Mane Nobiscum Domine (2004), and the Letter Dominicae Cenae (1980). The study will also delve into the theme as presented in the twenty-seven homilies delivered at the Liturgy of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday and those on the feast of Corpus Domini. In the light of these documents by the Polish Pope, this dissertation will explore the inextricable relationship which binds the Eucharist and Communion in the ekklesia, the Eucharist and Diakonia, the Eucharist and Christian witness and evangelization. By way of conclusion, the transforming effect of the sacrament on the lives of individuals, the Church and society will be highlighted. In keeping with the overall aim of this study, the first chapter will deal with the Eucharist as the source of discipleship and spiritual communion in the ekklesia. The second chapter will present the Eucharist as the stimulus for Diakonia, as a banquet in the ekklesia and a journey of love for service to all. This will lead to the third chapter which will address the Eucharist as a witness in Ministry and Mission. |
