Multiculturalism and migrant integration : comparative analysis of Sweden and Malta

Abstract

This dissertation examines multicultural policies that are aimed to meet the demands of immigrants which have rendered societies culturally and ethnically diverse. States and institutions often consider the integration of these immigrants as a way to avoid social cleavages and tensions. This study supports a multicultural policy for the Maltese islands. It examines the Swedish experience as a model that had first adopted assimilation and then it resorted to celebrate culture diversity and the integration of immigrants. The Swedish state adopted multiculturalism in spite of resentments from sections of the public opinion. While Malta is dealing with a large number of immigrants, it lags behind in the adoption of policies that open the way for further adaptation and integration in society. This dissertation will argue that, when successfully implemented, multiculturalism may open the way for the integration of migrants within this host society and it will also address anxieties which exist in Maltese society itself.
