Abstract: | Adolescence is an important and vulnerable period because of biological and psychological developments. Various elements can draw adolescents towards attempting or even committing suicide. Sometimes individuals attempt suicide as a cry for help, as a way of expressing despair and the wish to escape from it (Wikipedia, 2009). International statistics portray suicide as the fourth leading cause of death amongst adolescents (WHO, 2004). The year 2008 was recorded with the highest number in Malta of attempted suicides amongst Maltese people under 25 years of age (Police Statistics Office, 2009). In order to tackle this problem various prevention strategies are implemented in order to decrease suicide rates. Individuals undergoing mental health problems and/or abusing of drugs or alcohol are assisted so that suicidal attempts would be avoided. The aim of this research is to underline difficulties and risk factors for adolescents' attempts of suicide. It also aims to recognise adolescents; needs and vulnerabilities. The study also sheds light on Maltese organisations that offer services related to mental health and drug and alcohol abuse. |
