This dissertation aims to relate the concept of family background to children's school performance, focusing upon the socially deprived areas. This dissertation considers the different variables of family background such as social class, family structure, and parental stimulation, involvement and stability. School performance, incorporates children's motivation, interest in school, attitude towards school, attendance, rapport with colleagues and with teacher, participation in class, reading incompetence, academic performance and placement of the children after the year six. There is also an attempt to identify the roles of the social worker in trying to bridge the gap between the family and the school especially where it is most required in educationally and socially deprived areas.en_GB
