Abstract: Public interest and awareness of heritage sites can be stimulated by granting appropriate status to the sites involved. Although the most significant historical, archaeological and heritage sites in Malta receive some protection from the government, they are not explicitly promoted as 'National" sites or monuments. Marking heritage sites as places worth visiting, will immediately shift the public's perception regards these areas. Heritage sites constitute an important national resource that can be used in support of tourism, culture, education and economic development. In the future, the management of these resources should take greater account of these strategic national objectives. This area constitutes of various factors that form up an adequate site for setting up a recreational strategy. These issues are tackled and discussed individually further on in this study.
