Improving accessibility for people with special needs

Abstract

Accessibility is a major concern for disabled and elderly people. Frequently the lack of it means less mobility and subsequently the disabled and elderly people are confined to restricted spaces. Inaccessible places project the idea that the disabled and the elderly people are not welcomed by the society. Thus, barriers are created within the structure of the society itself. The aim of this dissertation is to assess whether public buildings, pedestrian areas, open spaces and facilities are accessible to all, or otherwise. For this purpose, questionnaires and surveys were specifically carried out. Moreover, existing information and statistics were used. This study makes special reference to Rabat, Mtarfa and Baħrija. A detailed case study of Ta' Saura Home for the elderly at Rabat is also included. The dissertation also outlines recommendations to improve accessibility and mobility within buildings/spaces. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation is to make the society fully aware of the problems of accessibility by quoting real situations and revealing the practical side of the issue. Much has been said on accessibility but it is almost time that the society should really do something about it. This dissertation should be an incentive for a good start, in Rabat, Mtarfa and Baħrija at least.
