Abstract: The number of students at the Malta, College of Art, Science and Technology (MCAST) is increasing year by year, especially after the recent emphasis made at national level on vocational education and training (VET). This study aims to test Holland's (1973, 1985, 1997) theory of vocational choice among a selection of post-secondary students attending MCAST. The study focuses on the relationship between students' interests and educational choices. Holland's (1997) congruence hypothesis indicates that similarity between the personality type and work environment results in higher levels of success and satisfaction. Holland's theory has been supported by various studies carried out in several countries, including Malta (e.g. Caruana, 2005). Previous research (e.g. Tracey, Robbins, and Hofsess, 2005) shows that the relationship between interests and occupational choice tends to strengthen during post secondary years. A quantitative approach was used to test three hypotheses based on relationships among variables. A questionnaire was developed and distributed among 205 MCAST students. Results indicate that there is a relationship between the students' interests and educational choices in line with foreign research. Moreover, MCAST students demonstrate higher levels of course satisfaction when their interests are congruent with their course. This study also reveals that gender differences exist among the students' interests and their educational choice. Results show that females tend to be more social and artistic, while males are more interested in manual and investigative activities. These differences are also reflected in their educational choices.
