Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and analyse factors that contribute to the success of small farm operations in Malta. Farmers must move away from traditional techniques and experiment with farm diversification in order to pass a vibrant farm economy to the next generation. To help with this a reference was made to the Rural Development Plan (2007-2013). The main focus is on agro-tourism, which is a highly consumer-focused sector in the agricultural market, by which farmers can increase their product recognition and profits. This sector can offer additional options for farmers and add stability to their income. As always the challenges for the agricultural community in Malta are daunting therefore farmers must move away from their produce and start earning their living by applying other methods of farming. The highlight of this dissertation is an interview together with a visit to a livestock farmer in Rabat where we took an overview of what should be done in order to start and put it into operation this business on his farm. The Marketing of this sector is very important so the link between agriculture and tourism will be emphasized. Also the MEPA Policy and Design Guidance for Agriculture and Farm Diversification was studied. A reference to MEPA Policies 3.3A, 3.38, 3.4A and 3.48 was also made to make stand out the requirements for this project in our country.
