Abstract: | This photo is taken from a site-specific 2010 production by Theatre Anon, cleverly written and directed by Paul Porte Iii, at the Ospizio, or Casa di Carita, in Floriana, Malta. The building, in origin a gunpowder mill, was later turned into a poorhouse for old people, prostitutes, children and the mentally infirm. The latter were known as 'mxajtna', a word deriving from 'xitan' (devil) indicating the association of mental illness with possession by evil spirit s. The building was abandoned when a new institution for mental patients was completed in 1861. [Excerpt] |
