La pubblicistica periodica in italiano a Malta, 1798-1940

Abstract

This study deals with Italian-language periodical publications published in Malta between 1798 and 194-0, that is from their inception up to their decline. The analysis follows a chronological order and each chapter deals with a particular time-frame. The first chapter spans from the origins of periodical publications in Malta to the granting of the freedom of the press in 1838, while the following chapter deals with newspapers and periodicals published during the first ten years of existence of a free press on the island. Particular attention is given to the effects on the Italian-language press of the Italian Risorgimento and of the beginning of local political life brought about by the new Constitution of 1849. The fourth chapter discusses the role played by the said press in the beginning and in the consolidation of party politics in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The decline of Italian-language periodical publications in the following century, as well as the impact of anglicization, Fascism, and international political developments on the local press are dealt with in the fifth chapter. The sixth and concluding chapter deals with the role of the Italian-language press in Malta in the Islanders' struggle for self-determination. The study also contains an appendix with a list of all known Italian-language periodicals published in Malta together with their respective date of first publication, genre and first known editor.
