Abstract: This study attempts to investigate the utility of the Work Trial Scheme as a tool to help jobseekers integrate into the world of work. This scheme is offered by the Employment and Training Corporation and is funded by the European Union. Fast changing economic and labour market trends call for individuals, who are flexible, trained and motivated to adapt to changing job requirements. The literature review gives an overview of issues related to work, unemployment, motivation, training, soft skills that employers look for as well as employability skills that render the jobseeker more employable. The aims and objectives of the WTS are discussed and compared to similar schemes in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. The scheme under study is investigated through a set of qualitative interviews with six employers who use the scheme, as well as ten participants who are still undergoing their training or have just terminated their twelve week training. The participants' collaborative experiences help to shed light on the benefits and limitations of the scheme. Both the employers and participants view the scheme in a very positive mind. The good practice of such schemes implicate that it is indeed beneficial to help the unemployed integrate in the world of work. Reference to the teaching of soft skills in compulsory education is discussed to help empower the individual with the necessary attributes to enhance employability skills.
