Abstract: | In setting out to write this short work on Nicola Zammit, I do not intend to overrate his importance. He is little known in Maltese philosophical circles end even less abroad. However there are various reasons which justify this short work on Zammit. The fact that very little has ever been written on Zammit and his works would partly justify this work (1). The fact also that he taught philosophy at the University of Malta for fourteen years (1876-1890) adds to the importance of our author. It is by treating of Zammit's works that we may gather some knowledge of the philosophical formation of the many young Maltese who undertook tertiary education during his time. But there are more valid and important reasons for undertaking this work. The first is that through this study of Zammit we also get an idea of the developments and tasks of European philosophy during the second-half of the last century. And finally, Zammit was a philosopher and as such should merit the attention of those interested in this field. |
