Abstract: The Nicaraguan revolution captured the imagination of several persons all over the world in the 80s because of the great promise it held out for building a socially just society. A truly international movement emerged in support of the Nicaraguan revolution comprising groups from various parts of the world . Attempts were , however , made to destabilize the revolutionary government through an internal civil war known as the Contra War . In the meantime great initiatives were introduced in the areas of education , including popular education , and health . This early period in the revolution will always be remembered for the Mass Literacy Crusade that took place. However things changed drastically since then as Maria Hamlyn Zuniga, a popular educator who worked in the field of popular health education in Nicaragua , explains in the following interview which is an extension of another interview one of us carried out with her in Toronto in 1991 . The updated interview was carried out in February 2005.
