Abstract: In the Libyan ma'luf musical tradition, the context which frames the hearing of this music among aficionados of this tradition includes accounts of past renowned sheikhs of ma'luf. Some of these accounts have been incorporated as part of the history underpinning this tradition; others, albeit more personal and somewhat more nostalgic, are gradually finding their way into the history of this music. This chapter sheds light on some of these historic accounts and examines how they relate to contemporary listening of this music.
