dc.description.abstractThe object of this project was to design and construct a robot arm for possible use in industrial or hostile environments. It was desired that the handling device be capable of holding a wide range of objects without crushing or dropping them. The complete system consists of the handling device with its associated circuitry and the position control system. It was intended that the position control unit be used to move the handling device, thus carrying the object. However, due to lack of time this aim was not carried out, and the position control unit was simply used to control a shaft position – to demonstrate its use. I take this opportunity to express my thanks to my tutor Mr. C. Muscat HNC (telecoms), MIEE, C Eng, for the encouragement and advice given. My thanks are also due to the other members of the lecturing staff in particular Dr. C. Pule BSc (ENG), PhD, MIEE, C Eng, who was always prepared to discuss any problems which I encountered throughout the project.en_GB
